At the celebration of May 1st and protest against privatization of shipyard "Uljanik" in Pula, two youth memebers of Socialist workers party of Croatia were taken to the police because they waved the "communist" flag.
This flag was historical flag of League of Communists of Yugoslavia (SKJ- Savez komunista Jugoslavije):
red flag dimension 3x5 meters with logo of star, sickle and hammer, initals SKJ and text "Workers all over the world united!"
In police station the flag was taken away, police made the log and released comrades. Official accusation sent to court is "disruption of public order and peace".
It is interesting, that the flag was kept quiet with a fence during event and that the comrades were stopped by the undercover policemen after the completion of the program and after they packed the flag.
The police also said that they will ask the court to destroy the flag. This flag was shown already two times and photographed by the press but only this time the police has taken action. All this is a clear attack on the freedom of speech and assembly in a country where democracy, freedom, anti fascism etc. are said to be fundamental values written in the constitution.
It shows that in Croatia freedom of speech and assembly are only phrases and are not safeguarded by the
institutions. |
